Deodorant crystals are not 100% safe. They are in fact, 100% unsafe. They contain ammonium alum, or ammonium aluminum sulfate dodecahydrate, a sulfate of aluminum, and therefore an aluminum salt, just like aluminum chloride, the principal ingredient in standard deodorants.

Just like aluminum chloride, ammonium alum stops the human body from secreting sweat. Just like aluminum chloride, ammonium alum has been linked to: several types of cancer, osteoporosis, anemia, headaches, kidney problems, liver problems, gastrointestinal problems, extreme nervousness, bone softening, decreased calcium absorption, muscle aches, and even colic and rickets in babies.

In terms of toxicity, aluminum chloride and ammonium alum are one in the same; as is potassium alum, or any other aluminum salt. Through clever propaganda, these crystal manufacturers have marketed their product as being “all-natural” or comprised of 100% natural mineral salts and nothing more.

Arsenic, lead, and mercury are also “all-natural,” but that doesn’t exactly mean that they should be applied liberally to your underarms. All aluminum salts are “natural mineral salts” as they naturally exist in chemistry. Again, that does not necessarily mean that they are healthy. In fact, they’ve pretty much been universally declared unhealthy by the scientific community.

This is basic chemistry we are talking about. I am the owner of Jungleman All-Natural Deodorant, and I constantly have to explain to people why crystals are so bad for you.

In fact, even if you never use my product, I would rather you use one of the sucky ones that don’t work, than one of these crystals. The crystals are just as bad, if not worse than standard deodorants.

I have one my GF bough me and it really does what the people here say it does.

It doesn’t smell, it feels like you have nothing on you, won’t sting your clothes. It is funny at first because all you do is get the rock wet and rub it against your armpit, just like that and it works GREAT!

I won’t buy a deodorant for the rest of my days.

I have one! It's called "Pierre d'Alun" and it's the best thing I ever found! No paraben, no perfume, nothing weird: just a lovely white crystal.

Anyone concerned they might accidentally turn into a hippie if they rub crystals on their pits: Lush has a baking soda/lemongrass/tea tree oil bar that smells great, lasts a long time and won't make you feel all girly to use -- once you get out of Lush, that is.
