Summer contest – Win Juicy bamboo skin cleansing cloths

Juicy Bamboo cleansing cloths

Juicy Bamboo cleansing cloths

Are you by any chance using one of those chemical-laden, disposable cleansing cloths like Olay? If so, please stop and check out this eco-alternative called Juicy Bamboo which has no harsh chemicals and is 100% biodegradable.   Honestly guys, there are just way too many chemicals by-products that get added into beauty products these days which are known endocrine disruptors. This means they disrupt our female hormones leading to acne, fertility issues, PMS, and of course, female cancers. If you don’t believe me, read Not Just a Pretty Face.

Fortunately, I was contacted by Toronto-based Kaia Naturals that just launched a healthier alternative of of chemical-free, disposable skin cleansing cloths. Made from unbleached bamboo, they are entirely biodegradable, soaked in vitamins C, B12, E and 8 essential oils, and are pH balanced leaving your skin slightly acidic to keep out bacteria. Check out their store locator to find the easiest place to purchase them.

Benefits of Juicy Bamboo:

  • No alcohol
  • No parabens
  • No sulfates
  • No synthetic fragrances
  • Remove makeup and mascara
  • Built-in toner
  • Vegan and cruelty-free
  • Environmentally-sound packaging

15 things people often forget to recycle

Common bathroom and bedroom items often thrown out instead of recycled

Sometimes, we think recycling is reserved for items in our kitchen but that’s simply not true. There are many things we dispose of daily throughout the house that could easily be recycled.

  1. Toilet paper rolls
  2. Paper towel rolls
  3. Kleenex boxes – Remove the plastic lining, open the flaps on the side then flatten
  4. Shampoo & conditioner bottles
  5. Skin care bottles -Face cleanser, eye make-up remover, toner bottles & face cream containers
  6. Cooking oil bottles – I go through a bottle of olive oil a month but I always recycle them. Place the bottle on its side over the sink, then remove the plastic spout by placing a knife into the groove between the bottle and the spout, it will pop out. Clean by shaking with water and dish-washing soap first, then recycle.

  8. Beauty product containers – Shower gel & scrub containers
  9. Disposable hygienic products boxes -Q-tips, bandaid, pantyliner & feminine products boxes
  10. Hand & body lotion bottles – You might have to remove the pump, but you can easily recycle the bottle. Rinse first please.
  11. Toothbrush & some make-up packaging – Just because it has a small amount of paper packaging doesn’t mean it’s too small for the recycling bin. Recycle the back portion of the toothbrush package or why not your lipstick and mascara boxes?
  12. Vitamin & cough syrup bottles – Make sure to rinse the cough syrup bottles first so they’re clean and not sticky
  13. Deodorant packaging – This might surprise you but check the back. If you see the recycling symbol (two arrows) you’re good to go. Just make sure there is no deodorant left in it. Some deodorant spray cans can even be recycled too.
  14. Shaving cream bottles or cans – Same thing as deodorant. If you see the recycling symbol, you can, but do favour non-aerosol versions and ideally plastic bottles in the future which are more easily recyclable . You can also get shaving cream bar soaps which require no recycling at all as there is no packaging waste to begin with. Olive oil bar soap is also a great alternative for shaving.
  15. Various recycling symbols on beauty products

If you see these recycling symbols on beauty products, you can recycle them

  16. Old bills, receipts & gum packaging – These papers can stack up quickly. Once you don’t need them anymore shred them (I take mine to work – shhh) then recycle them. As for gum, choose the non-blister packs as they are plastic-less and if you do get a blister pack, at least recycle the outside cardboard packaging.
  17. Pets – Yes, random, but pets also get disposed of when they are no longer wanted. Some are killed humanely, others are not. Where I live in Montreal, many are still killed in in gas chambers. If you’re looking for a friendly companion, please choose adoption and check out where you can choose a pet based on breed, sex or size,  based on available pets in your  area.

How to whiten your teeth naturally!

Bright smile

Brighten your smile naturally without the use of harmful chemicals

I’ve searched all over to find safe and natural ways of whitening teeth and came across many such as pastes of dried oranges and bay leaves, rubbing your teeth with the bark of a walnut tree or rubbing white vinegar on them. Now as much as I’m sure they “might” work, none of them seem very appealing and for Heaven’s sake, where does one even find walnut tree bark???

Personally I wouldn’t want to use commercial teeth whitening products because of packaging waste, some like Crest whitestrips are tested on animals (otherwise they don’t get the CDA or ADA approval so I’ve heard) and my dentist said they can make your teeth more sensitive.

A solution for me would be something that is easy-to-use, non-toxic, has no waste (or packaging would at least be recyclable), not tested on animals and inexpensive.  These are the 4 easiest solutions that I’ve come across and you might already have the ingredients in your home.

How to feel great and cure acne though a liver cleanse

Urban Green Girl feels great!

Urban Green Girl feels great!

Hallelujah I feel great; I just completed a liver cleanse!

Let me tell you why. Being an Urban Green Girl is about dealing with issues before they become problems. I feel the same way about health and believe 100% in preventative measures to achieve optimum mental and physical health.

Unlike most adults, I was plagued with acne not as a teenager but as an adult. After having my dermatologist put me on a wealth of dangerous drugs, namely Accutane (Isotretinoin) and Tetracycline I was put on Diane 35 (Cyproterone), a birth control praised for ridding acne in 99% of adults. And it did, brilliantly.

The Problem-

Ten years later, I decide to go off the pill because I don’t feel it’s right to have something synthetic Continue reading

How to naturally get rid of mosquito bite itch

Kayaking in the 1000 islands

Kayaking in the 1000 islands with many mosquitoes

Ah the summer! Finally we can shed our clothes and get out and play in the nature. The main hazard though, besides sunburns, is dealing with those damn mosquitoes. Whether you’re camping, horse back riding, hiking or canoeing, they’re everywhere. I’ll be honest, I’ve yet to find a deterrent that works. And when it’s hot, the last thing I want to do is cover up. Plus, I hate the feel of mosquito repellents on my skin, especially on my hands. Thus, here are (5) five natural remedies for mosquito bite itch relief:
  1. Baking soda and water (paste)
  2. Vinegar
  3. Apple cider vinegar
  4. Salt and water
  5. Crushed aspirin with a few drops of water

Does anybody have any natural mosquito bite prevention tips?
