This past week, I completed the 7-day master cleanse again for the second time. Why? Because I cured my seasonal allergies from doing it 2 years ago. That’s right, I haven’t had to take Claritin or Aerius in 2 years. Now that’s what I call preventative medicine!

Three weeks have passed since I finished my master cleanse and I am ready to give you the results.

My skin didn’t clear up like I was hoping, so this just proves that it is, indeed, hormonal and stress related. Asides from having a huge feeling  of self accomplishment and pride, I did lose 7lbs overall, and this wasn’t even a goal. It has been 3 weeks since I finished, and this weight hasn’t come back. I have, however, been careful to not over eat since this was a good starting over point for me.

Pros:

  • Sense of accomplishment
  • Stable weight loss, 7lbs overall
  • Toxin removal
  • Better appreciation for food
  • Eat better (eat more grains)

Cons:

  • Did not clear my acne
  • Took 2-3 weeks to get my digestive system back to normal
  • Went on a food binge afterwards

Day 10 of the Master Cleanse – Breaking the fast

I made it, today is Day glass of 10! Phew I am tired and ready to start eating again. I did my second liver cleanse last night as my naturopath said it would be a good idea and I wanted to do a second one. This morning I passed a few, very tiny liver stones, but almost none I am happy to report. This means that the first liver cleanse I did in July got rid of almost everything and is also a testament to my healthy lifestyle.

Today at 2pm, I had a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice but it was a little hard to swallow at first. One hour later I was feeling stronger and able to drink more.

I made a delicious veggie soup for lunch with carrots, celery, herbs de provence, basil, red lentils and pearl barley. I regret having added the pearl barley though as I don’t think my digestive system was ready for it. I should have kept it more simple, veggie broth and vegetables.

For supper I had steamed vegetables, brown rice and a little spinach salad. Throughout the day though, I kept drinking the orange juice.

My digestive system doesn’t seem to be handling the food yet though.  I think I’m going to keep to soup broth, fruit and orange juice for the next few days. I am craving chewy things though like dried mango and licorice. Overall, I laid low today and watched movies in bed, as I was quite exhausted.

I can say though that my skin does look better following the master cleanse. I’ve read that breaking the fast is almost as important as the fast itself so I’ve decided to do a follow up report in one week when my digestive system should be back to tell you if I reached my objectives and if  it was worth drinking the lemonade diet for 10 days!

Day 6 on The Master Cleanse – Fed up of the lemonade

Today is day 6 of my master cleanse.

I’m fed up of drinking the lemonade. I’m dreaming of food, but not hungry. My sore throat is now a cold.

However, I’ve lost 12lbs. Part of this is fat, some is water and some is toxic matter that’s lodged in our digestive system which we can’t loose through dieting or exercise. Hopefully, this weight won’t come back.

Tips for fuzzy teeth – Brush with baking soda, it will help neutralize the acid in the lemons.

Day 5 on The Master Cleanse a.k.a. The Lemonade diet

I’m half way there! My skin is looking a little better. My tongue is less fuzzy! I’m losing weight like crazy. My sore throat is going away. I’m really dreaming of food now, ugh! I’m clearing a lot of mucous out of my body thanks to the cayenne pepper. This means my body was too acidic before which means I was more prone to sickness. Need to eat more veggies and grains to stay more alkaline.

Day 2 & 3 on The Master Cleanse a.k.a. The Lemonade diet

Here is The Master Cleanse recipe:

You will want to consume 3 litres or 96 oz of this lemonade per day. I believe you can drink more if you wish though. The cleanse lasts 10 days but some people go as long as 40 days.

The lemonade: Take 3 times as day

Makes 1 litre/32 oz-

  • 6 tablespoons of lemon juice (freshly squeezed, not from concentrate)
  • 6 tablespoons of Grade B  or Number 2 pure maple syrup
  • 1/8 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • 1 litre or 32 oz of filtered water (spring or purified)

Snacks:

Can be taken throughout the day; in between lemonade drinks.

  • Organic Green tea (Japanese Sencha variety preferred as higher quality tea leaf
  • Mint tea
  • Glasses of water

Optional:

You may want to take a laxative tea at night to help clear out the digestive system. I bought the Malva-T kind but you can take whatever you like. I did hear that a Senna laxative might be too strong and the side effect with this, if taken for longer periods, is that your own digestive system could become lazy and stop doing “the work” itself.

Very Important tip – Maple Syrup

Make sure you you buy the Grade B or Number 2 quality maple syrup. The Grade A or Number 1 variety which we often find in grocery stores is harvested earlier in the season and has less minerals and carbs. The Grade B or Number 2 variety, which is technically a lower quality due to its darker colour and taste, is harvested later in the season and thus has more minerals, nutrients and carbs. Trust me, you will want all the carbs and minerals you can get since this is all that will be sustaining you for 10 days. The Grade B maple syrup is harder to find so you may want to call around a few shops before hand.

Tips for buying the ingredients:

Let’s face it, pure maple syrup and lemons are expensive. Since the quantity you’ll be needing is more than a regular consumption amount, you can try negotiating with the stores if you explain your situation.

In Montreal, I bought my maple syrup at Marché des Sauveurs at Marché Jean Talon. The gave me a 10% discount since i bought so many cans. As for the lemons, I bought 90 lemons at Marché Adonis for under $25 but I’ve also heard that if you tell your local health food store you’re doing the Master Cleanse, that they might give you a special price, and they’ll more than likely be organic!

Since doing the liver detox 2 months ago, it has been my next goal to complete the Master Cleanse a.k.a. the Lemonade Diet. Although Beyoncé did this to lose 22lbs for her role in Dreamgirls, I’m choosing to do this to clear my acne and cleanse my body from alcohol and other contaminants such as pesticides, herbicides and preservatives etc.

The Master Cleanse is a drink made up of lemon juice, maple syrup (Grade B), cayenne pepper and water. The lemons cleanse, the maple syrup gives you vital minerals and calories and the pepper apparently breaks up mucous in the body, delivers vitamins B & C and gives you that extra kick needed. No food is consumed for the length of this detox although herbal teas and laxatives can be taken. I will probably drink green and mint tea while doing this.
